Dear Friends of St. Patrick’s Old Rock Church:

Praying as always that this letter finds you in the warmth of God’s graces, we are beginning the planning for this year’s picnic. The 70th annual picnic will be held, as tradition holds, on the third Sunday in August. That is, August 17, 2008. A calendar with this date and other important dates is located on the back of this letter.

We did not hold mass on St. Patrick’s Day this year as it fell during Holy Week but will resume this practice next year.

Once again we will celebrate Mass on Memorial Day at 11:00 AM. This is a very special year. We will be welcoming The Most Reverend Raymond Burke, Archbishop of St. Louis to preside at our celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist. The best we can tell from our records this will be the first time that an Archbishop has ever said Mass at St. Patrick’s. The fourth degree honor guard from the Monsignor George Hildner assembly of the Knights of Columbus will again join us. After mass all are invited for coffee and donuts in the pavilion. We hope you are able to join us.

This year we undertook a very special project. The organ was disassembled and taken to Iowa by Bill Hoenig of Hoenig Organ Building for restoration and repair. It was returned and re-assembled in early March. The organ is a Peffer circa 1892 and is one of only 200 left in the United States and one of the very few that has not been mechanized. We would like to extend a special thanks to the late Paul Courtney for his generous gift toward the restoration. This was, nonetheless, an expensive undertaking and additional gifts would be greatly appreciated. Contact any of the board members or send correspondence to one of address on the back of this letter. Please mark special donations (e.g. ‘organ restoration’).

This year we lost one of the original members who helped to save the church. In 1936 Thelma Pedrotti, who passed away this year, along with Mattie McEvoy pushed to organize and establish the restoration; by 1939, starting the first Picnic. Without this effort the Rock Church would not be standing today. She was a dear friend whose effort and support of the Rock Church continued through to the end.

In 1972 the Preservation Society was formed to care for the church. We have lost many dear members of the original society and friends of the picnic this year and over the years and our membership continues to grow older.

In order to continue our traditions we need a new generation to take an interest in the Rock Church. While we have added some young blood, so to speak, in recent years; we still can use more. An important part of the 70 years of picnics and preservation work has been handing those traditions down through the generations. Please encourage the young members of your families to participate in meetings and picnic events. If you need to update your address or would like to add family or friends to our mailing list you can call or write to John and Netti Painter (information on back of this letter). Please mark clearly ‘add to list’ as we receive a lot of other correspondence.

We pray that our patron, St. Patrick, will watch over you and that the Lord will bless you and keep you.

Thank you from the St. Patrick’s Board.
