Minutes of St. Patrick Benevolent Society

Origin of said society

A number of the parishioners of Armagh Parish Franklin County Missouri in order to establish a more perfect union among each other, and also to diffuse knowledge among its members, to assist its worthy pastor in objects of a benevolent character and for general purposes of benevolence did by the advice and consent of their worthy pastor agree to meet at the residence of Rev. Father Berry on Dec 31st for the purpose of organizing themselves into a society for the purposes aforementioned.

Pursuant to agreement A meeting of the Parishioners of St. Patrick’s church was held in the residence of the Revd Father Berry

On Dec 31st 1865 for the purpose of organizing a society to be called the St. Patrick’s Benevolent Society.

On motion

The Revd Father Berry was elected President Pro term.

On motion Jas. F. McBrearty was chosen Secretary Pro Tem.

On motion

All those who were willing to become members were called on to sign their names when the following persons declared their intention to become members by signing their names.

Pursuant to adjournment a meeting of th friends of the society was held at the residence of Rev. Father Berry. The minutes of the former meeting was read and on motion adopted.

On motion it was resolved to go into an election of officers.

Revd Father E. Berry was nominated for President and elected.

Jas F. McBrearty and John Early were first in nomination for Vice President when on ballot Jas F. McBrearty was declared elected.

F. W. Bowles & William Galvin were nominated for Secretary. On ballot F. W. Bowles was declared elected.

Matthew Lynch and John Early were nominated for Treasurer. On ballot – John Early was declared elected.

Thomas Ever & Bernard Early were nominated for Sergeant at arms. On ballot Thos Evers was declared elected.

Patrick McBrearty and J. P. Glasmier were nominated for Librarian. On ballot Patrick McBrearty was declared elected.

On motion the meeting adjourned until Sunday Jan. 11th, 1866.

Pursuant to adjournment a meeting of the society was held at the residence of Revd Father E. Berry on Sunday Jan 1st, 1866. When on election Daniel Coffee and John Barrett were admitted as members of this society.

On motion it was resolved that at the next special meeting of the society. The following resolution be discussed.

Resolved that the Pioneer has conferred greater benefits on mankind than the statesman.

Moved by John Early that the first special meeting of the society be held on Saturday Jany 27th at Six O’Clock P.M.

St. Patrick’s Benevolent Society held their regular monthly meeting at the usual place on Sunday Feby 4th 1866.

Roll call. Minutes were read and on motion adopted.

It was moved and seconded that the President be requested to receive the books from each member on or before the next monthly meeting.

Carried.

It was moved and seconded that the President be authorized to procure the blanks and necessary writing materials for the society and that the necessary money is hereby appropriated out of the funds of the society.

Carried.

It was moved and seconded that all members over the age of Forty five years shall not be subject to the fines and penalties imposed by the by laws for non attendance.

Carried.

It was moved and seconded that we admit names to place on our roll of honor.

Carried.

A resolution was offered admitting his Grace Peter Richard Kenrick Archbishop of St. Louis to membership.

Carried.

It was moved & seconded that the Secretary be instructed to write to his Grace the Archbishop of St. Louis informing him of his unanimous election to honorary membership in this society.

Pursuant to adjournment a special meeting of St. Patrick’s Benevolent society was held at the usual place on Saturday Feby 24th 1866. The President being absent, The Vice President took the chair.

On motion the minutes of the preceding meeting were adopted.

On motion the following resolutions was adopted.

Resolved that if any person be found guilty of criticizing the speech of our member, outside of this society he shall be fined the sum of twenty five cents for each offence and if not a member shall thereafter be excluded from the debates of the society.

On motion a committee of three were appointed as judges of the debate, namely Dennis Whalen, Patrick Galvin and David Galvin.

The question previously selected was then discussed.

Pursuant to adjournment the St. Patrick’s Benevolent society held a special meeting at the usual place on Saturday March 3rd 1866.

The President in the chair, The meeting being called to order by the President the minutes of the preceding meeting were read and on motion adopted.

The following resolution was then offered and on Motion adopted, Resolved that any member consenting to take an active part in any debate and failing to attend and participate in the discussion without a good and sufficient excuse shall be fined by the president not less than twenty five cents nor more than One dollar.

The question previously selected was then discussed.

On Motion Mr. Owen Casey was proposed for membership and elected by acclamation.

On motion Mr. John Galvin was proposed for membership and unanimously elected.

On Motion Mr. John Dunigan was proposed for membership and unanimously elected.

On Motion Mr. Michael Glenn was proposed for membership and unanimously elected.

On Motion of Jas F. McBrearty. It was resolved that the President be authorized to have the Constitution and by laws printed and the necessary funds are hereby appropriated for that purpose.

On Motion Mr. Patrick Fox was admitted to honorary membership in this society.

On Motion Revd Father Gallagher of St. Louis was unanimously elected to honorary membership in this society.

On motion Revd Thomas Burke of St. Louis was unanimously elected to honorary membership in this society.

On Motion the President was requested to appoint a committee of three to value the books belonging to the library. Mr. Henry Golden, Matthew Lynch and Dennis Whalen were appointed said committee.

On Motion the meeting adjourned.

Amendments, Treasurer to pay money only on the order of the secretary countersigned by the President. President to countersign all money orders issued by the secretary. Secretary to draw upon the Treasurer for all moneys appropriated by the society. President to appoint an auditing committee to examine the books and accounts of all officers and report upon the same before they are turned over to their successors in office.

After a spirited discussion a decision was rendered in favor of the affirmative.

On. Motion of Mr. John Glasnier it was resolved that the debates of this society be suspended until the first day of November next.

On motion the meeting adjourned.

Upon a call of the President of St. Patrick's Benevolent society a special meeting of the society was held at the usual place on Sunday April 30th, 1866 for the purpose of making arrangements for celebrating the approaching 4th of July.  The President being absent the vice President took the chair.

On Motion it was resolved that the celebration be styled Grand Ball and PicNic of St. Patrick's Benevolent Society for the benefit of St. Patrick's church.

On Motion it was resolved that the President be requested to have 300 tickets printed as soon as convenient or more if he considers it necessary to do so.

On Motion it was resolved that the price of tickets be fixed at One dollar and fifty cents each including dinner and supper. Single Meals fifty cents each and no person shall be entitled to the floor without a ticket.

On Motion the following members were appointed a committee of arrangements.

The regular monthly meeting of St. Patrick's Benevolent society was held on Sunday May 6th, 1866 the Vice President in the chair. Roll called and dues collected.

On motion the minutes of the previous meeting was adopted.

On Motion it was resolved that all tickets for the approaching festival be endorsed by the Secretary before distribution. Tickets were then distributed to various members and on motion the meeting adjourned until Thursday May 10th, at 12 O'clock M.

Pursuant to adjournment a meeting of St. Patrick's Benevolent society was held on Thursday May 10th, 1866 the vice president in the chair. Roll called and minutes of the previous meeting adopted.

The committee of arrangements reported a selection of the ridge above Coyles spring as the most suitable place for holding the approaching festival.

On motion it was resolved that the committee of arrangements be also instructed to act as committee on programs and report tat next meeting.

On motion the meeting adjourned.

The regular monthly meeting of St. Patrick's Benevolent society was held on Sunday June 3rd, 1866. Roll called and dues collected. On motion the minutes of the previous meeting were adopted. 

On Motion Mr. Charles Noonen was unanimously eleected a member of this society.

On motion the president was requested to have 36 badges made for the use of the society and the necessary funds are hereby appropriated for the purpose.

On motion the Secretary was requested to invite Major Murphy of Washington to deliver an address at our approaching festival.

The Vice president there appointed Dennis Whalen. William Galvin and Henry Golden an auditing committee to examine the books of the society and report upon the same at the next regular meeting.

The society then went into election of officers when on ballot the following gentlemen were elected for the ensuing six months.

Sept. 2, 1866

The Society met pursuant to adjournment it being the regular monthly meeting.

Mr. President absent, Mr. Vice Presidnet in the chair. Mr. Secty. being absent on motion J. P. Glasmier was chosen secty. pro tem.

Before any business of the society could be time acted, the books of the society were to be found, which was accordingly done, and brought before the society, the next thing in order being roll call and the collection of dues and fines the same was proceeded with and a quorum found present The following gentlemen were fined and paid the fine assessed by the chair. J. P. Glasmier for being absent one meeting without showing sufficient cause 25cts, John McBrearty fined 25cts same cause a chairman was chosen protem, for the purpose of investigating the case of our worthy V. P. after some little debating in regard to the duties of officers of the society and the example shown to the rest of the society by their absenting themselves without just cause our V. P. came off with a fine of 25cts after which he again resumed the chair.

On looking over the books of the society, the resignation of the Secty. addressed to the president together with some money due, the

society was found. The President being absent the resignation could not be acted upon, the money however was paid over to the treasurer and his receipt taken for the same after which on motion the society adjourned to meet on Sunday the 7th day of October the same being the day for the regular monthly meeting.

Glasmier, John McBrerty, Patrick Galvin, William Galvin, Henry Golden, David Galvin, John Earley, Daniel Coffee, John Barrett, P. F. McCoole, John Dunnigan, Absent. ZP. McBrerty, Dennis Whelan, John T. McBrerty, James Glenn, Barney Early, H. Vanhueston, John Galvin, Micheal Glenn, Joseph E. Bowles, Chas Nooman, William Flanigan, after roll call the following gentlemen were fined as follows Daniel Coffee, absent two meetings without sufficient cause 50cts paid, William Galvin absent one meeting 25cts not paid, P. McCoole ab. one meeting 25cts paid, the committee appointed to investigate the books and acts of the society made the following report Franklin Co. Mo. Sept. 16th, 66

We have examined the different accounts kept by the Secretary, Treasurer, and Librarian of St. Patrick's Benevolent Society, which accounts we found to be kept correct up to the above date. Dennis Whelan, Henry Golden, William Galvin, after some little discussion in regard to procuring a book for the Librarian, on motion the meeting adjourned to meet on the first Sudy. in Nov. at 2 Oclock P. M.

November 4th, 1866

The meeting came to order Mr. President in the chair after roll call the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. 

Moved and seconded that a committee of two be appointed to wait upon the delinquent members and know their intentions in regard to their membership. Carried.

The chair appointed Henry Golden and P. Galvin as said committee, the same to report the next meeting.

According to a resolution passed Apr. 14th/66 the same being to the effect that the debating be adjourned until the first of Nov./66 and the date having arrived it became necessary to choose a subject for discussion.

The Chair appointed Jas. F. McBrearty, John P. Hesan & William Galvin to choose the same and report at the next meeting.

Moved and seconded that a special meeting of the society be called to meet on the eleventh inst. carried, after which upon motion the meeting adjourned.

December 2 1866

The Society met at the residence of the Rev. Father Berry, Mr. Vice President in the chair. Roll called and dues collected, there being a quorum present the society went into business.

On motion it was resolved that all members of the society, who having been delinquent for the term of five months should be dishonorably discharged from the society, and their names be stricken from the roll of membership, carried.

The following gentlemen is therefore expelled from the society as members thereof. William VanHuesten, Micheal Glenn, Joseph E. Bowles, James Glenn, John T. McBriarty, Charles Noonan, William Flanigan.

On motion the society went into the election of officers for the ensuing six months. 

Nominations being in order for president, Rev. Father Berry, and James F. McBriarty was nominated, after some electioneering the ballot was taken and Mr. Jas. F. McBriarty was elected.

November 4th, 1866

C. Goldin P. Galvin & J. Dunnigan, were put in nomination, the ballot being taken and the majority of the whole being necessary for a choice and neither of the candidates having received the same on motion it was resolved to drop the candidate having received the least number of votes, Mr. C. Goldin was accordingly dropped, Mr. P. Galvin & Mr. J. Dunnigan being the only contestant in the field, the ballot being taken resulted in the election of Mr. Patrick Galvin as Vice President of the Society, on motion his election was made unanimous.

Nominations for Secty. being in order Mr. J. P. Glasmier & William Galvin were nominated the ballot being taken, Mr. John T. Glasmier was declared elected.

The following gentlemen were then put in nomination for treasurer Henry Golden, for Librarian Wm. Galvin, for Sergeant-at-arms, Thomas Evers their being but one candidate in the field for an office on motion their election was made unanimous by acclimation  on motion a vote of thanks was tendered to our Ex-President Rev. Father Berry, for the able and efficient manner in which he has discharged the duties of President of the Society, since its first formation.

The committee appointed to chose a subject for debate, at a previous meeting, made their report, out of some six or seven subjects - presented by the committee, the society selected the following.

Resolved that War is a benefit to mankind.

The chair appointed as disputants J. P.. Glasmier & Jas T. McBrarty the disputants then drew for sides, and for first choice of speakers resulting as following.
